In an effort to tackle heavy congestion and overwhelming tourist traffic during peak seasons, the Dehradun district administration is considering introducing a mandatory pre-registration system for visitors to Mussoorie. The move aims to control the surging number of tourists flocking to the popular hill station, especially after the footfall reportedly doubled between 2022 and 2024, according to a report by the Times of India.

The proposed system will require tourists to register before entering Mussoorie during high-traffic periods. “Only during the peak season,” the system is being planned to “tackle long traffic jams,” a local official told TOI. Entry checkpoints will be set up with surveillance cameras at key locations, including Kempty Fall and Kuthal Gate, to enforce the rule.

The tourism department recently held a meeting to discuss how to implement the system. Tourists will be required to provide contact details, vehicle information, and number of travellers as part of the registration. Once completed, they’ll receive an OTP on their mobile number, after which a QR code will be generated.

Visitors must present this QR code at the entry gates. Authorities will verify incoming vehicles using Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems, and any tourist without a valid registration will be denied entry.

The initiative comes in the wake of growing concerns over crowd control. In 2024 alone, over 21 lakh tourists visited Mussoorie. Videos of massive traffic snarls have frequently gone viral on social media, especially during summer and winter holidays or long weekends.

In a tragic incident in June this year, a tourist from Delhi reportedly died after being stuck in a traffic jam, unable to reach medical assistance in time highlighting the dire need for better traffic and emergency management.

Authorities believe the proposed pre-registration system could be an effective measure to streamline tourist inflow, reduce gridlock, and ensure visitor safety in the “Queen of Hills.”
