Former President Pranab Mukherjee’s daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee said it was high time when the Congress Party should look beyond the Nehru-Gandhi family. While talking with the news agency PTI at the 17th Literature Festival in Jaipur, Sharmistha said being a Congress supporter and a responsible citizen of the society, she was worried about the party.

 Sharmistha Mukherjee said the grand old party should bet on a new face as the party suffered defeats in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha polls when Rahul Gandhi was at the helm.

She said during the UPA regime, her father asked Sonia Gandhi that they should rather consider sitting in Opposition than running a weak government.  

On being asked if she was going to join the BJP, Sharmistha said she was a staunch supporter of Congress and the news making the rounds was just a rumour.

Sharmistha also questioned the ideology of Congress when an X user said her father scaled up in politics because of the Congress party and Gandhi-Nehru family. She said her father deserved all the positions he got in the party. “Congress or Gandhi-Nehru family didn’t give any position to my ‘papa’ out of charity. He earned it & deserved it. Are the Gandhis like feudal lords expected 2 b paid homage 4 generations? What is d current Congress party’s ideology btw? Becoming Shiv-bhakts just before elections?” Sharmistha posted on X.

Earlier, Sharmistha made a plethora of revelations about the Congress Party and shared several anecdotes from her father’s political life in her book.
