Nagpur-Goa Shaktipeeth Expressway: Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan said on Monday that construction on the proposed Nagpur-Goa Shaktipeeth expressway will soon start, despite fierce resistance by farmers. According to him, the projected cost of constructing the 802-kilometre greenfield project is Rs 86,300 crore. Farmers who are protesting, fear losing their fields, even if the proposed road project provides access to a number of holy pilgrimage destinations.
Farmers in Western Maharashtra's sugar belt are strongly opposing the Nagpur-Goa Shaktipeeth expressway project. Opposing farmers have vowed to hold a protest march in Mumbai during the second week of March, claiming that they would lose their lands as a result of the forthcoming greenfield project, according to The Indian Express.
The Maharashtra Governor in his speech to the joint session of the first day of the Maharashtra Assembly Budget Session said, “This expressway will be completed after taking all persons into confidence. This expressway will connect major religious and pilgrimage sites along the route. This expressway will not only reduce travel time but also foster economic growth in the region”.
According to him, the state government would build 7,480 km of cement-concretized roads under a number of Public Works Department (PWD) initiatives. This method will guarantee long-lasting roads and safer, more effective transit throughout Maharashtra.
