Nandini Milk prices in Karnataka will increase by Rs 4 per litre starting April, Karnataka Cooperation Minister KN Ranjana announced on Thursday. The price of Nandini curd will also rise by Rs 4 per kilogram, the minister added. The decision follows persistent demands from dairy farmers and the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) to offset rising costs.
Minister Rajanna stated that while the milk federation sought a Rs 5 per litre increase, the government agreed to a Rs 4 hike. He emphasised that the entire increase should benefit farmers.
The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF), which sells dairy products under 'Nandini' brand, had previously increased prices in 2024. At that time, a Rs 2 hike per packet was accompanied by an increase in milk quantity per packet by 50ml. However, KMF maintained that the adjustment was not a price hike since the volume also increased.
Currently, a 1,050 ml pack of Nandini toned milk (blue packet) is priced at Rs 44. With the upcoming revision, the price of a one-litre Nandini milk packet will increase to Rs 48.
The decision comes amid protests from dairy farmers and organisations like the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Green Brigade. Since February, these groups have been demanding a rise in the milk procurement price to Rs 50 per litre and an interim support price of Rs 10 per litre until a Minimum Support Price (MSP) is implemented.
The milk price hike coincides with increases in bus and metro fares, as well as power tariffs in Karnataka. Earlier, KMF chairman Bheema Naik had hinted at a possible price hike, citing increasing operational costs.
