NEET Paper Leak:  In a major breakthrough in its NEET UG paper leak probe, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday arrested a key accused from Maharashtra's Latur. The arrested man Nanjune Dhppa allegedly took money from NEET candidates claiming that he would increase their entrance test marks. The action of the central probe agency came hours after the Supreme Court asked it to file an affidavit on the progress of the investigation so far. The agency has made several arrests from Bihar, Gujarat and Jharkhand in connection with the NEET UG Paper leak row.

Earlier today, the apex court heard a batch of petitions in connection to the NEET UG 2024. While most of the pleas requested the court to quash the NEET result and conduct a fresh examination, a few opposed the re-exam, claiming it would jeopardise the future of lakhs of students.

NEET UG: Supreme Court Blasts NTA, Centre 

Taking a strong stand on the NEET paper leak, the apex court came down heavily on the National Testing Agency and the Ministry of Education. It asked several questions addressed to both the stakeholders and demanded an affidavit by Wednesday 5 pm.

The court also asked the counsels for NEET opposing petitioners to make combined submissions in front of it, not exceeding 10 pages. While admitting that the sanctity of the NEET UG 2024 was breached, it said that a retest would be the last resort. 

The bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud was hearing the matter. CJI put forward three parameters for the court to decide whether a re-NEET was required.

It asked to examine the agencies if the alleged breach took place on a systematic level. The court also asked agencies to find out the nature of the paper leak to assess the extent of the breach. It further asked whether it was possible to segregate the beneficiaries of the fraud from the untainted students.

In a situation where a breach of sanctity affects the entirety of the exam and if segregation is not possible, then retesting is needed. If beneficiaries are identified, then a retest won't be needed, which involves students on such a large scale, CJI said while deferring the matter to July 11.
