NEET UG 2024 Result: After a massive row erupted over the alleged paper leak and irregularities in the result of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET UG 2024), the National Testing Agency (NTA) has rejected the claims of students and teachers, saying that "there was no paper leak" and the integrity of the exam was not compromised. This came as many stakeholders, including students, parents, and teachers, intensified their protest against the alleged irregularities, which surfaced after the NEET UG 2024 result was declared on June 4.
Many student organizations, including NSUI, ABVP, and AISA, have also extended their support to the protesting students while demanding a high-level inquiry into the allegations of paper leak and other irregularities in the NEET UG 2024.
What is the NEET UG 2024 Result row?
A row erupted after the NTA declared the NEET UG result on June 4, which showed 67 students scoring the rank 1 in the exam. Among other irregularities, students and teachers flagged that six toppers belonged to a single exam centre in Haryana. The issue was further complicated when students discovered that many students were given grace marks as compensation for the time lost at the centre. Along with it, the fact that many students scored 718 and 719 marks out of 720 also raised suspicion over the transparency as the exam follows a +4 and -1 marking scheme.
What is NTA saying on NEET UG 2024?
NTA, the nodal agency to conduct the college and university entrance exams, rejected the apprehensions on Saturday by holding a press conference. The Director General (DG) of NTA said that the decision to provide grace marks was taken on the instance of our internal committee.
"Our committee met and they perused all the details of the centres and the CCTVs... They found out that at some centres the time was lost and the students should be compensated for that... The committee thought they could address the grievances and compensate the students. So the marks of some students were increased. Due to that, the concerns of some students have surfaced because certain candidates got 718 and 719 marks and 6 candidates became toppers," NTA DG Subodh Kumar Singh said in the NEET 2024 issue.
"We have analyzed all things carefully and released the results. Out of 4750 centres, this problem was limited to 6 centres. And out of 24 lakh students, only 1600 students faced the issue. The integrity of this examination was not compromised throughout the country... There was no paper leak... The whole exam process has been very transparent," he further added.
What students alleged
While the NTA is trying to clear the air over the issue, students have started protests in different parts of the country. Earlier today, many NEET candidates gathered outside the Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi to protest against the NEET 2024 exam leak and other discrepancies.
Meanwhile, the row has intensified as many political parties have now jumped to support the students on the issue. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi also demanded a fair investigation into the exam leak issue.
"First, the NEET exam paper was leaked, and now students are alleging that there has been a scam in its results as well. Serious questions are being raised over six students from the same coaching centre getting 720 out of 720 marks, and many kinds of irregularities are coming to light. On the other hand, there are reports of many children committing suicide across the country after the results were announced. This is very sad and shocking," Priyanka Gandhi Vadra wrote on X in Hindi.
