Another National Entrance-cum-Eligibility Test (NEET) student has died by suicide before the June 21 re-examination. A 17-year-old student, who was scheduled to appear for the upcoming NEET-UG re-examination, allegedly died by jumping from the sixth floor of his apartment early Thursday morning. Police said no suicide note was recovered from the scene
Providing details about the incident, Sabarmati police station inspector YR Vaghela said that the incident occurred in Ahmedabad's Tragad area. Police said the student jumped off the sixth-floor balcony of his apartment in B-block of 'Aristo Anandam' flats in the Tragad area around 2:55 AM on Thursday.
The incident came to light after the society's security guard found the student lying unconscious and immediately alerted the society members. The student was then rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The body has since been sent for a postmortem.
Police investigations have revealed that the deceased student was preparing for NEET. According to officials, the student was bright and had scored well in his previous exams. He lived with his mother and younger brother in Ahmedabad, while his father (a lawyer by profession) lives in Surat after their parents separated.
Inspector Vaghela said that family members have denied any suggestion that the student was under any mental stress or pressure. Since no suicide note has been found, police are investigating the case thoroughly to determine the exact cause of the suicide.
The initial medical examination for undergraduate courses was held on May 3. However, the paper got leaked, which led to a massive controversy across the country and the cancellation of the examination. The National Testing Agency (NTA) later announced to hold a re-examination on June 21.
Strict measures have been taken to ensure free and fair examination. While the Telegram app, which was found to be exploited by the accused, has been temporarily banned till June 22. The Indian Air Force, on the other hand, made over 200 sorties in 4 days to transport papers across the country to prevent the possibility of a leak in the logistical process.
