New Delhi:  The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry has served eviction notices to more than 200 Members of Parliament (MPs) to vacate their official bungalows in Lutyens' Delhi, PTI reported on Monday, citing sources. The notices were sent under the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act.

The former MPs are required to vacate their bungalows within one month of the dissolution of the previous Lok Sabha, as per the rules. The MPs have been asked to vacate the bungalows at the earliest.

"So far, more than 200 former MPs have been issued eviction notices for overstaying. They have been asked to vacate their official bungalows at the earliest. The process to send notices to more former MPs is underway," the PTI reported quoting sources.

On failing to vacate the bungalows within the stipulated time, the accommodation will be forcefully evicted with the help of teams of officials, it reported.

Although the Lok Sabha Secretariat provides accommodation to MPs, the Housing and Urban Affairs (HUA) Ministry allots bungalows to Union ministers in Lutyens' Delhi.

Eviction proceedings are initiated if former ministers and MPs fail to vacate their official bungalows within the stipulated time period.

Meanwhile, Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has been allotted the bungalow at 83 Lodhi Estate, which was previously occupied by a former central information commissioner, another source said.

The source also noted that no eviction notice has been issued to any former Union minister for overstaying yet.

So far, over four former Union ministers, including Smriti Irani, have vacated their official bungalows in Lutyens' Delhi.
