The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has vowed to start a fresh protest in Delhi on Sunday demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the alleged irregularities in the electoral process. On Saturday, the situation in the capital worsened with over 7000 people detained across Delhi.
Police will try to prevent protesters from gathering at Jantar Mantar or entering the New Delhi district on Sunday. Movement on key roads will be regulated depending on the situation on the ground, officials said, adding that police and Central Armed Police Forces personnel would remain deployed until the situation eased.
On Saturday, the police began its crackdown on protestors by detaining key leaders of the CJP, including Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, from a flight at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in the wee hours of Saturday. YouTuber Dhruv Rathee and CJP legal cell head Ratna Singh were also detained at their homes to stop them from joining the police. Around 400 suspected protesters were detained from different parts of Delhi overnight by the cops.
Following this. Ajinkya Shinde was designated by the group to lead the agitation after its leader, Abhijeet Dipke, was taken into custody. Said protesters would attempt to reach Jantar Mantar again on Sunday and continue their agitation until their demands were met.
Sharing a hard-hitting post on X, All India Students Association (AISA) president Neha Bora said that the CJP protest against the CEC would continue on Sunday as well. “Let a hundred Jantar Mantars bloom! Another part of Delhi will become Jantar Mantar tomorrow,” she added.
