  3. P Chidambaram questioned tangible benefits from recent BRICS summits.

BRICS Summit: Ahead of the BRICS Summit, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor asserted that the event was a "matter of prestige" for India. In a video message, Tharoor highlighted the importance of the event by mentioning the huge population and economy of the BRICS members. His remarks came a day after another senior Congress leader P Chidambaram raised questions over the outcome of the recent BRICS summits.

Tharoor Highlights Importance

In his video, Tharoor stated that India is providing important stage to the 11 countries, adding that the group accounts for 41 per cent of global GDP. He further stated that the presence of prime ministers and presidents of several countries in New Delhi is a matter of prestige itself.

"This grouping, the 11 BRICS countries, represents a majority of the world’s population and 41 per cent of global GDP," Tharoor said. "Secondly, of course, having a dozen heads of state and government, not only members of BRICS but also some observers coming at presidential and prime ministerial level, is a matter of great prestige for us," the Congress leader added.

However, he pointed out that while the trade volume among the BRICS members has significantly increased, New Delhi has largely been the importer. "Trade among the BRICS countries has been growing, but in many ways to our disadvantage. Our exports to the BRICS countries have gone down, while our imports from the BRICS countries have gone up," he said.

Chidambaram Questions Outcomes

Earlier on Thursday, Congress MP P Chidambaram alleged that India has not been getting any benefits of these multilateral events in the past few years. "I don’t think the last two or three BRICS summits have resulted in tangible benefits or tangible results," Chidambaram told news agency ANI.

"In fact, we are part of BRICS, we are part of SCO, we are part of G20, and we are part of QUAD. What benefits are we getting out of that? I can’t see. In the last two or three summits, I didn’t see any benefits. Earlier, the BRICS Summits resulted in some tangible benefits," he added.

While citing Tharoor's video, the BJP has stated that the BRICS summit has once again exposed the internal crisis of Congress.
