Safety Compromised While Building Balconies
People in Noida and Greater Noida buy flats at exorbitant prices because they offer all kinds of amenities, but the balconies, which used to enhance the beauty of homes in societies, have now become a major safety threat. Buyers' carelessness, builders' arbitrariness, and authorities' negligence have made balconies an accident-prone area.
Locals Call For Uniform Safety Policy
Pooja, Mahagun Mywoods Society, said every day there are reports of people falling from balconies. Keeping safety in mind, a uniform policy should be made to cover the balconies safely, she added.
Another resident, Rinki, from Mahagun Mywoods Society, said that due to the number of accidents involving small children, families with young kids should definitely install a safety net on their balcony. In addition, they should keep the balcony door closed to prevent children from accessing it and ensure that chairs or stools are kept away from the balcony, she added.

Why Are Balcony Incidents Increasing?
According to the standard, balcony grills in societies should be three and a half to four feet high. Even though the grills are installed according to the standard, safety is still lacking. Most people place potted plants to enhance their balcony's beauty. They even place pots on stands outside the balcony. In many societies in Greater Noida West, heavy pots weighing 10 to 20 kilograms are hanging from iron angles outside the balconies.
People install stands outside to save floor space. In a strong storm or even a mild earthquake, these flower pots can fall directly onto people standing on the street or in the park below. According to building bylaws, it is completely illegal to place any type of projection, stand, or flower pot outside the outer wall of a balcony.
Builders Create Hurdles In Covering The Balcony
Most builders object to covering balconies, citing the need to alter the layout. This creates a constant risk of accidents in high-rise societies. People say that, keeping safety in mind, a uniform policy should be made to cover the balcony safely, so that the layout is not violated and accidents can also be prevented.
In order to gain more space, people cover their houses with glass and fibre optics instead of metal mesh. These illegal sheds can easily collapse in strong winds and rain.
