BRICS Joint Declaration: In a major diplomatic breakthrough, BRICS members have reached consensus on a joint statement after intensive negotiations that continued until around 4 am on Saturday. The agreement is particularly significant as Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are part of the same forum despite deep differences on several regional and geopolitical issues. The joint declaration is expected to be formally announced shortly as the 18th Summit has kicked off at Bharat Mandapam under India's chairship.

Members Reach Consensus After Intensive Talks

According to news agency ANI, citing government sources, India held sustained consultations to bridge differences among members and build consensus on several contentious issues. Amid ongoing conflicts and heightened tensions in West Asia, India worked to bring together members with different views and build a consensus that could be accepted by all.

After several hours of talks and discussions, the members agreed on the joint statement. According to sources, several contentious issues were discussed during the negotiations. “Against the backdrop of ongoing conflicts and heightened tensions in West Asia, India’s efforts helped ensure that these differences did not derail the BRICS process, paving the way for a consensus Joint Statement despite sharply divergent geopolitical positions among member countries,” the post by ANI read.

PM Modi Addresses BRICS Summit

Meanwhile, addressing the BRICS Summit 2026, PM Modi welcomed the participating leaders to India and said the country’s BRICS chairship was based on a “people-centric and humanity-first approach.” He said resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability were among India’s key priorities, with a special focus on connecting BRICS cooperation with people.

PM Modi also proposed the creation of a “Seafarers’ Emergency Support Network” to provide assistance to seafarers during difficult situations. He said the network would connect maritime authorities and diplomatic missions of relevant countries to help with distress alerts, medical aid, family notifications and evacuations.
