Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) co-convenor Saurav Das has questioned the outcome of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections, arguing that the result reflected a divided student vote. His remarks came after the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) won three of the four central DUSU posts, while independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen won the vice-president’s post.
Reacting to the results, Das said the majority of students were against what he called the “present regime”, but claimed that opposition votes were fractured. He said those who won positions should also remember that they did not receive votes from a majority of students.

Das Questions Congress’ DUSU Strategy
Das also criticised the Congress and its organisational wings, arguing that the party should focus on resolving its internal issues rather than targeting the CJP.
He pointed to the victory of independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen, who had contested after being denied an NSUI ticket. Shokeen won the vice-president’s post with 30,615 votes, while ABVP secured the other three central posts.
Das said, “That sorting game has been going on for 12 years now, and people are losing patience - just like the rebel NSUI candidate who has won with a HUGE margin for VP on being denied an NSUI ticket.”
CJP Leader Raises Questions Over Opposition Unity
Das also questioned sections of the Left student groups, saying some, though not all, appeared focused on “ideological purity and exclusivity.”
He said such groups should recognise that students were not seeking their validation. “If this is the opposition ‘unity’, then I’m afraid they will continue to remain in Opposition,” Das said.
He further criticised attempts to conclude the political mood of young people from a single student-union election.
“Reducing the political mood of an entire generation of hundreds of millions of young Indians facing joblessness, a broken education system, dilapidated schools, inflation and mass despair to the result of ONE student-union election, completely run on money and muscle power, is not great analysis,” Das said.
ABVP Wins Three DUSU Posts
The DUSU results saw ABVP’s Yash Dabas win the president’s post with 24,576 votes, defeating NSUI candidate Vijay Shankar Meena by 2,053 votes. ABVP candidates also won the secretary and joint secretary posts, while independent Deepanshu Shokeen secured the vice-president’s position.
