Mangaluru Police have arrested five second-year college students for allegedly ragging and assaulting two first-year BBA students from Kerala, officials said on Saturday. The victims, both 19, were allegedly taken away by a group of senior students and subjected to physical assault after being stopped near their college in the Pandeshwar area on September 19.
The two students were walking near their college when the seniors allegedly took them away on motorcycles. According to the complaint, they were taken to an isolated location after refusing to comply with the demands made by the senior students.
The victims alleged that the accused assaulted them with belts, metal rods and pipes. They also alleged that the seniors removed their clothes and threatened them with further consequences if they reported the incident to college authorities or the police.
The injured students subsequently returned home and informed their parents. With their parents' assistance, they approached the Pandeshwar police, following which a case was registered.
The incident has been registered as a ragging case involving students of the private college. Police had booked nine students based on a complaint filed by 19-year-old Ameer Ali, a resident of Edakkazhiyoor in Chavakkad, Kerala. Ali alleged that he and his classmate Mahammed Alfaz were kidnapped, assaulted and subjected to ragging by the accused.
The case has been registered under Section 116 of the Karnataka Education Act, 1983, which specifically deals with ragging in educational institutions. Police have also invoked Sections 140(3), 127(2), 115(2), 118(1), 351(2), 109 and 190 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said the five arrested students are Rahan M P, Mohammed Uvais, Mohammed Adil U P, Rohan Ramesh and Nashed Ameer. All five are 19-year-old second-year BBA Logistics students at a private college in Mangaluru.
Rahan and Rohan are from Payyanur in Kerala's Kannur district, while Uvais is from Kasaragod, Adil is from Kozhikode, and Nashed is from Kannur district, police said.
Police are searching for four other students allegedly involved in the ragging case. The investigation into the alleged ragging and assault is underway.
