Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday revealed a major government plan for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), assuring that it will be implemented in 21 states before the next general elections in 2029. Shah made the announcement of plans while speaking to the media on Seva Sankalp Abhiyan in Mumbai.

"We introduced the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in several states. I am confident that we will implement the UCC in all 21 states governed by the BJP-led NDA before 2029," he said.

He added that the government had strengthened the criminal justice system in the country through the introduction of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, claiming that a 30 per cent increase in the conviction rate has been recorded in several states in a single year.

When asked about conflicts over language and regional identity, Amit Shah clarified that the government's policy is to prioritise the mother tongue.

"It is our government’s policy to prioritise the mother tongue, and the Constitution has also issued specific directives to the states in this regard. I do not believe this will become a major issue," he said.

On controversial incidents, the Home Minister emphasised the state leaderships' role. "While isolated incidents may occur if certain individuals attempt to stoke tensions, the states have experienced leadership and will certainly find a way to resolve such issues," he added.

Month-long 'Seva Sankalp Abhiyan' to start on PM Modi's birthday

The month-long "Seva Sankalp Abhiyan" is being conducted nationwide to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 25 years of public service on October 6. The campaign will start on September 17, the birthday of PM Modi and will conclude on October 17, reaching every district, Lok Sabha and Assembly constituency and polling booth.

The Home Minister added that the entire BJP-led NDA, voluntary organisations and people across the country will participate in the event.
