In a chilling incident, four employees of a hotel died in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain after falling into the waste chamber of the property. The incident took place at Shri Ganga Hotel on Dewas Road on Saturday night. Several other employees were also injured in the incident. Rescue operations were launched soon thereafter, which continued late into the night.
The waste chamber, located on the right side of the hotel, is used to dispose of leftovers from sweets, dairy products, and other items. Around 10:30 pm on Saturday night, four employees went down into the chamber to clean it but were unable to get out.
To help them, a fifth cleaner named Hemraj entered the chamber. Soon he himself started feeling uneasy and panicked. Hemraj fell unconscious inside the chamber due to the toxic gas. Hemraj was followed by two more people who also reportedly fell ill. They have been hospitalised. Upon receiving the information, Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma also arrived at the scene.

As the rescue operation was started, they faced difficulty in opening the chamber gate. Madhav Nagar station house office (SHO) Gajendra Pachauriya, who was on the site, brought an angle grinder from the nearby construction site. Using it, the gate was cut open, and those trapped inside were subsequently pulled up. The four cleaners who entered the chamber to clean it could not survive.
Ujjain Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma said the waste may have made the surface inside the chamber slippery, upon which the workers fell. Subsequently, a gas leak may have caused the workers to suffocate.
Others who went inside to help also fell but were rescued and taken to the hospital, where some are now in stable condition. Police personnel made repeated attempts to revive the victims by administering CPR, and a medical team was on standby at the hospital. All four deceased were taken to the hospital by ambulance.
