Jagran Correspondent, Uttarkashi: Eight people are stranded beyond Bhojkharak after an avalanche struck the Kedartal trekking route in Uttarakhand. Emergency teams are carrying out rescue operations to safely evacuate the trapped individuals.

The stranded group is part of a 13-member team, including seven trekkers and six support staff, that departed Gangotri on October 27. The team was scheduled to return on October 29; however, heavy snowfall, glacier movement, and severe weather blocked the route, delaying their return.

When the team did not return on schedule, attempts were made to contact them. On October 30, the trekking agency established phone contact with the group, who confirmed they were safe near Kachi Dhang and requested emergency assistance.

Rescue Operation Underway

Teams from the NDRF, SDRF, Forest Department, and local trekking agencies initiated a joint rescue operation on Saturday. Given the challenges of rescue operations in high-altitude terrain, authorities are currently attempting to secure helicopter support to ensure a swift and safe evacuation for the remaining stranded individuals.

Uttarakhand Helicopter Crash

Earlier on Friday, six people, including a pilot and five passengers, died after a helicopter carrying them crashed in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district. Teams from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) are scheduled to reach the crash site on Saturday.

The crash comes amid concerns over helicopter safety in the Char Dham sector. In an accident investigation report released earlier this month, the AAIB said eight helicopter accidents had been reported in the sector between 2015 and 2025, with most attributed to flight crews' failure to adhere to standard operating procedures.
