Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nisith Pramanik on Saturday was sworn in as a Cabinet Minister in the Suvendu Adhikari-led government on Saturday at Brigade Parade Ground. Pramanik has played a key role in the party politics and has emerged as one of the most influential faces in North Bengal over the years.
Beginning his career from grassroots politics, joining the Union Cabinet, and his stunning return to state power, Pramanik has scripted an intriguing way of politics.

Who Is Nishith Pramanik?
Born in West Bengal's Coochbehar district in a small town, Dinhata, Pramanik started his career by joining the Trinamool Congress. In 2019, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and subsequently won the Cooch Behar Lok Sabha seat, emerging as a key leader in the disputed area. The Print has described him as the "Cooch Behar Strongman," owing to his rising influence in the region.
Belonging to the Ranbanshi community, the BJP leader soon rose as a significant personality in the region. In 2021, Pramanik was designated to the Union Council of Ministers as minister of state for Home Affairs and Youth Affairs & Sports, becoming one of the youngest ministers in the Narendra Modi government. He served in this role until 2024, handling internal security and youth-related portfolios while maintaining strong political activity in West Bengal.
After quitting the post, Pramanik once again engaged in state politics, and this time he acquired the seat of the cabinet minister after defeating the Trinamool Congress from the Mathabhanga Constituency in the Cooch Behar district.
The BJP won the 2026 Assembly elections with an unthinkable majority of 207 seats, while the TMC won 80 seats. The historic victory ended the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress and proved to be a major setback for the green party.
