NIT Srinagar: National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar suspended all academic activities on Wednesday after protests erupted over an inflammatory social media post by a student. According to the officials, academic activities, including classes, examinations, and administrative work, will remain suspended till further notice is issued.
Registrar of the premier engineering institute, Atikur Rahman, issued a notification of suspension of classes on Tuesday. Earlier, protests rocked the college after a religiously hurtful post of a NIT student became viral. Videos of protesting students marching and raising 'religious slogans' inside the campus erupted. The protesters have demanded stern action against the accused student who has been sent on leave by the college administration. Attempts to block the gates of the institute, located in the Nigeen area of the city, were also made by the protestors.
According to a PTI report, the student was a non-local who was studying at the college. Sources have said that the student was a 3rd-year student who will be passing out next year. Following the large-scale anger among the local students, Srinagar police registered an FIR and launched a probe into the matter.
"The police received information about a protest by students at the NIT campus. Upon investigation, it was discovered that a student had posted objectionable content on social media, though the video was not the student's own, but taken from YouTube, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, V K Birdi said on late Tuesday.
According to the PTI report, IGP Birdi said that the content of the post has hurt the religious feelings of the people.
IGP Kashmir while speaking about the incident said that, “upon receiving the information about the incident and a written letter from the registrar of NIT campus for seeking legal action, they have taken action under relevant laws and have set an investigation into motion.”
