North India is reeling under an intense heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius in several areas. Punjab’s Bathinda recorded 47.6 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, which was 5 degrees Celsius above normal and the highest in the country. Delhi also recorded its highest temperature of the season at 45 degrees Celsius.
This time, hilly regions are also bearing the brunt of the heat. The temperature in Himachal Pradesh’s Una was recorded at 44.2 degrees Celsius, marking the hottest day of the season in the state. In Rajasthan’s Ganganagar, the temperature also reached 47.4°C.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for extreme heat in Delhi until Wednesday. People have been advised to remain alert and take precautions to protect themselves from the heat. IMD stated that the daytime temperature on Wednesday is expected to remain around 45°C, while nighttime temperatures are likely to stay around 29°C.
In Punjab, Ludhiana recorded a maximum temperature of 45°C, while Chandigarh, Amritsar, Patiala, Faridkot and Gurdaspur reported 44°C on Tuesday. According to the weather department, heatwave conditions are expected to continue in the state until June 13. The weather department has issued an Orange Alert in the area.
On Tuesday, heatwave conditions were observed in five districts of Himachal, including Una, Mandi, Kangra, Bilaspur and Kullu. Shimla also recorded its hottest day of the season.
Sundernagar recorded 39.5°C on June 10, the highest since 2019. The weather department has forecasted that heat conditions will intensify in the state over the next two days.
In Uttarakhand, the weather has remained dry and clear for the past week. Intense sunlight has been contributing to the rise in temperatures. Tuesday was the hottest day of the season in Dehradun, where the temperature touched 39.1°C for the first time this year. In several other plain areas, temperatures approached 40°C. However, starting Wednesday, rain has been forecasted in the state, which may provide some relief from the heat.
According to Bikram Singh, Director of the Meteorological Centre, cited by Jagran.com, a warning has been issued for lightning, heavy rainfall and strong winds in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Almora, Champawat and Nainital on Wednesday.

Jammu and Kashmir is also experiencing extreme heat. On Tuesday, Jammu recorded a maximum temperature of 44.4°C. Even in Srinagar, the maximum temperature reached 33.5°C. According to the weather department, no relief from the heat is expected until Friday and the temperatures are likely to remain around 45°C. However, cloudy skies and light rainfall are likely on June 13 and 14.
