As many as 34 persons have been killed in floods and landslides, triggered by heavy rains, in the northeast region. Assam, Manipur, Tripura, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh are among the states witnessing incessant downpour for the last three days.
Tourists were left stranded at several locations and the India Air Force was roped in to carry out a rescue operation after a request by the state administrations of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. 14 individuals stuck in the middle of the flooded Bomjir River were rescued to a safe location.

“A critical humanitarian assistance and disaster relief mission was launched by the Indian Air Force yesterday, in response to a request received from the state administrations of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. 14 individuals stranded in the middle of the flooded Bomjir river in the Lower Dibang Valley of Arunachal Pradesh, cut off from the mainland, were rescued to a safe location. The operation was undertaken by Mi-17 helicopter,” Defence PRO, Guwahati, said.
In the past 48 hours, at least nine people have lost their lives in Arunachal Pradesh due to landslides triggered by relentless rainfall. The state government has announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh for the families of the deceased.
In neighbouring Mizoram, four individuals died after their homes collapsed amid landslide incidents. Chief Minister Lalduhoma convened an emergency meeting on Sunday with senior ministers and key officials to assess the situation and coordinate relief efforts.
Manipur has also been severely impacted, with over 3,800 people affected by continuous heavy rains. Officials confirmed that multiple homes have collapsed due to landslides across the state, according to a report by Mid-Day.
In Sikkim, flooding and landslides have left more than 1,500 tourists stranded. A vehicle carrying several passengers plunged into the Teesta River in Mangan district, killing one person in the incident. Eight persons are missing.
Assam also continues to bear the brunt of the monsoon, with over 10 fatalities reported in rain-related incidents so far. According to an official bulletin cited by PTI, more than 4 lakh people have been affected across 20 districts, with seven major rivers flowing above danger levels.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has spoken to the Chief Ministers of the affected northeastern states to take stock of the situation. He assured them of the Centre’s full support and assistance during this crisis.
