Odisha News: In a spine-chilling incident, an Odisha man carried his deceased sister's skeleton to the bank to withdraw money from her account on April 27. The tribal man walked three kilometers in the scorching heat in Keonjhar district to withdraw Rs 19,300 after the bank asked him to present valid documents. Jitu Munda, the tribal man, is the sole surviving relative of the deceased after her husband died recently. The officials stated that a detailed probe has been launched for more details.
While providing details, the officials stated that the man carried his sister's skeleton out of frustration. They further stated that the initial probe suggests that the bank asked him to produce the documents as he was not a class-I legal heir of his sister. They asserted that the tribal man has initiated the process of getting the necessary documents.
"The tribal man was not aware of the procedural aspects. Out of frustration, he did this. Prima facie, it appears that since this man is not a class-I legal heir of his sister, the concerned bank rightly asked him for documents which he could not produce. Today, he will apply for the necessary documents," Uma Shankar Dalai, Sub Collector, Keonjhar, was quoted as saying by the news agency ANI.

"We are facilitating early processing of Red Cross Assistance of Rs 20,000, the death certificate and the legal heir certificate and release of the deposited money to the legal heirs in consultation with the bank," he added.

The villagers were reportedly left stunned after Jitu Munda arrived at the site with the dead body, reported NDTV. They accused the bank officials of lacking empathy and asserted that the authority could have approached the regional representatives for verification process. The officials have assured that the tribal man will get the necessary assistance from the back officials.
However, Odisha Grameen Bank, in a statement, said that Munda was not harassed by any official, adding that he was allegedly intoxicated when he arrived at the bank, reported IANS. It further stated that the account will be settled after submission of a valid death certificate
