The monsoon arrived in Delhi on Friday morning, with the city recording 228.1 mm of rainfall, the highest for June since 1936. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Delhi, forecasting moderate to heavy rain across Delhi NCR till July 4. Weather experts noted that Delhi typically receives around 650 mm of rainfall during the monsoon season, experiencing one-third of this total rainfall on Friday in just one day.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has deployed mobile pumps, super sucker machines and other equipment to manage waterlogged areas, with 72 permanent pumping stations and 465 mobile pumps operational in the city. However, many roads remain waterlogged in the metropolitan city.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Metro saw a significant surge in passenger journeys due to waterlogging and traffic congestion caused by heavy rains over the past few days. On Friday, June 28, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) reported a record number of over 69 lakh passenger journeys.
"The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) recorded over 69 lakh passenger journeys on Friday, even as the Metro services operated without any disruption with a punctuality of 99.95 per cent despite the heavy rains that lashed the city and its peripheries," DMRC said in a post on X.
