India has begun operating its Nyoma airbase to boost its military capabilities in the eastern part of Ladakh along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) border. According to Jagran.com, a simultaneous military exercise called Eastern Prachand Prahar is underway in the high-altitude terrains of Mechuka in Arunachal Pradesh.

The decision taken by India is bound to have greater geopolitical ramifications against the backdrop of improving India-China relations. The development is taking place on the opposite side of more than 34,000-kilometer-long LAC border which demonstrates India’s military preparedness along the Chinese border.

“Diplomatic relations between both countries are steadily improving. Military confidence-building measures are also steadily strengthening, but a trust deficit remains evident on the ground,” a senior official was quoted as saying by the Times of India. The official further said that the forward deployments of troops have continued for the sixth consecutive year since multiple Chinese incursions have occurred along the eastern part of the state since 2020.

Nyoma Airbase Upgraded

Air Chief Marshal AP Singh inaugurated the Mudh airfield at Nyoma Airbase aboard a C-130J ‘Super Hercules’. Mudh airbase is the world’s highest airbase in the world located at an altitude of 13,710 feet. Singh was accompanied by Western Air Command chief Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra.

The airfield has undergone a massive overhaul of worth Rs 230 crore, which includes the extension of the original airstrip into a 2.7-km ‘rigid pavement’ runway, a new ATC complex, hangars, a crash bay, and accommodation.

The Mudh airfield is now fully capable of handling and sustaining operations by heavy-lift transport planes and fighter jets from both directions. Primarily, it will help quickly rush troops, weapons and supplies to areas such as Pangong Tso, Demchok and Depsang in eastern Ladakh. The airfield will also be available for fighter operations by early 2026 though high altitude will be a limiting factor.
