India conducted precision drone strikes on key targets in Pakistan on Thursday, including in the cities of Karachi and Lahore. According to the Ministry of Defence, cited by ANI, the air defence system in Lahore was neutralised during the operation.
This was in response to Pakistan’s attempt to target multiple cities in northern and western India using missiles and drones on Wednesday. However, India’s missile defence system successfully intercepted and neutralised these attacks.
"Indian drones continue to be sent into Pakistan airspace...(India) will continue to pay dearly for this naked aggression," Pakistan military spokesperson Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said.
Pakistan said Israeli-made HAROP drones to attack their cities.
The HAROP, developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), is an advanced loitering munition that seamlessly integrates the functions of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with the precision strike capabilities of guided munitions.
Facts About HAROP
- HAROP is a loitering munition that combines the characteristics of both a UAV and a missile
- It has an endurance of approximately 9 hours, allowing it to search, detect and engage targets over a long duration
- The guidance system includes electro-optical day/night sensors, a colour CCD camera, and anti-radar homing capabilities
- HAROP can carry a 23 kg (51 lb) explosive payload, which enables it to neutralise a wide range of high-value and mobile targets such as radars, air defence systems, tanks, command posts and supply depots
- HAROP can be launched from canisters mounted on trucks or naval vessels, making it easily deployable from various terrains and environments
- It is powered by an electric propulsion system, allowing it to operate silently
- The weapon system is controlled remotely through a human-in-the-loop mission control, and the mission can be aborted if necessary
- HAROP is resistant to GNSS jamming, ensuring it can continue its mission even under communication disruption
- It can attack targets by diving steeply or shallowly from any direction, making it highly versatile and difficult to counter
