Pahalgam Attack: 26 people were killed while several others were injured after terrorists opened fire on a group of people, mostly tourists, in Baisaran Valley, a prime tourist spot in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, April 22. In one of the deadliest attacks on civilians in the region in recent years, all 26 victims were confirmed to be men. Shortly after the news of the attack broke out, an offshoot of the Pakistani-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the Resistance Front, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde confirmed that five of the victims were from the state. A 26-year-old lieutenant of the Indian Navy from Haryana, who got married almost a week before the attack, was also killed in Kashmir on Tuesday. Two people from Karnataka, two from Kolkata, a local from Pahalgam were also killed in the incident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who cut short his Saudi Arabia visit and returned to Delhi this morning, chaired a high-level meeting with Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, NSA Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and other officials at the Palam airport upon his return.

The coffins of the terror attack victims have been brought to Srinagar airport, with several state government representatives arriving to assist in repatriating the victims and tourists to their respective states, news agency ANI reported.

According to a report by news agency PTI, the three suspected terrorists, identified as Asif Fauji, Suleman Shah and Abu Talha, are all Pakistani nationals. The suspects have also been given code names -- Moosa, Yunus and Asif -- and were reportedly involved in previous terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch.
