Pakistani army violated the ceasefire along Line of Control (LoC) for the 11th consecutive night amid heightened tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad following the recent Pahalgam terror attack. The Pakistani troops initiated unprovoked firing in eight forward sectors along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir, violating ceasefire agreements and prompting retaliation from Indian troops, officials said on Monday.

The firing was reported in areas opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajouri, Mendhar, Naushera, Sunderban, and Akhnoor. The Indian Army responded promptly and proportionately to the unprovoked firing, a defence spokesperson in Jammu said.

Pakistan began by firing small arms at posts along the LoC in Kupwara and Baramulla districts of north Kashmir. They then extended their ceasefire violations to the Poonch and Akhnoor sectors. Following this, firing occurred in Sunderbani and Naushera sectors of Rajouri district, and eventually reached the Pargwal sector along the International Border in Jammu district, reported news agency PTI.

The ceasefire violation by Pakistan occurred despite a recent conversation between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan, where the Indian side cautioned the Pakistani side about the unprovoked firings.

The situation has escalated since April 24, when India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty following the Pahalgam terror attack. Pakistan had blocked its airspace for Indian airlines, closed the Wagah border crossing, and suspended all trade with India.

The firing exchanges have made the February 2021 ceasefire agreement redundant, with widespread violations by Pakistan in scores of sectors along the 740-kilometre-long LoC. India and Pakistan had agreed to a renewed ceasefire along the borders in Jammu and Kashmir in February 2021.

The India-Pakistan border stretches over 3,323 km, divided into the International Border, Line of Control and Actual Ground Position Line. The situation remains tense, with both sides maintaining a strong military presence along the border.
