As India pays tribute to the fallen jawans 22 years after the Parliament attack, the kingpin of the dastardly terror strike, Masood Azhar Alvi, is enjoying safe havens in Pakistan’s Islamabad. Azar has been charge-sheeted in India for orchestrating a plethora of attacks, including the 2001 Parliament attack and the 2016 Pathankot airbase attack.

As per reports, Atal Bihari Vajpayeep-led NDA government was mulling an attack on PoK four days after the Parliament attack. It was only then that Pakistan, fearing an Indian attack, designated Azhar as a terrorist and his outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed as a terror organisation on January 14, 2002.

A UN Security Council committee blacklisted the head of the Pakistan-based militant group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) after China dropped its objection to the move, ending a long diplomatic impasse. He was listed as a designated terrorist by the UN Security Council 1267 Committee in 2019, a move seen as a significant victory for India on the global platform.

Pakistan’s Claim:

Pakistan in 2022 wrote to the Taliban’s foreign ministry asking authorities in Afghanistan to locate and arrest Masood Azhar, according to a Pakistani media report. This came after international authorities mounted pressure on Pakistan to act against Azar. As per Geo News, Pakistan in a letter said they believe Azhar was “hiding somewhere in Afghanistan”.
