Parliament Live Updates: Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday tabled the Waqf Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024 in the Lok Sabha amid fierce protests from the opposition leaders, who termed the bill "anti constitution". The amendment bill, which seeks to rename the Waqf Act 1995 to UMEED (‘United Waqf Act Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act', 1995), seeks to amend the Waqf Act of 1995 and repeal the Mussalman Waqf Act of 1923. Congress leader KC Venugopal raised strong objections, calling the Bill an attack on the Constitution. "I would like to raise an objection to this draconian law introduced by the government. Fundamentally, this is an attack on the Constitution," Venugopal said. The Congress MP argued that the Bill violates Article 26 of the Constitution, which grants the right to form and maintain institutions for religious and charitable purposes, manage religious affairs, and administer property according to the law.
Responding to objections raised by several opposition members on the introduction of the bill in Lok Sabha, Rijiju said the Waqf Act 1995 did not serve its purpose, hence the amendment was planned. He said the Waqf (Amendment) Bill does not intend to interfere with the freedom of any religious body and that no provision of the Constitution has been violated. "I want to tell Congress these amendments are being brought to achieve what you (Congress) couldn't," he said. Defending the amendments, Rijiju said a joint parliamentary committee had recommended that the Waqf Act 1995 should be re-looked. Apart from introducing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, Kiren Rijiju also introduced the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill, 2024 which seeks to repeal the Mussalman Wakf Act, 1923.

Now, if the MP is a hindu or Christian, then what can we do about it.? Now, if an MP is added to Waqf Board by the virtue of him/her being an MP, then should we change the MP's religion?",
