Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav will take oath today as the MPs of Lok Sabha, on the second day of the 18th Lok Sabha. The first day of the 18th Lok Sabha session saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi and members of his Council of Ministers, including Home Minister Amit Shah, taking their oaths. Notable individuals set to take their oaths in Parliament today include Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Mahua Moitra, Supriya Sule, Kanimozhi, and Sudip Bandyopadhyay.

BJP’s Bhartruhari Mahtab was sworn in as the pro-tem Speaker of the House by the President. He in turn administered oaths to other members of the house. INDIA bloc leaders entered Parliament with copies of the constitution.

Alongside the oath-taking, the opening day also saw the opposition launching a fierce attack on the ruling party over the NEET (UG) 2024 paper leaks and the appointment of BJP's Bhartruhari Mahtab as a pro-tem speaker.

The Congress party criticized the appointment of seven-term MP Mahtab, calling it a violation of the established traditions of the Lower House. Senior members of the INDIA bloc, including Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, and other INDIA bloc leaders, staged a protest in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s oath was marred by ‘NEET-NEET’ jeers amid paper leak allegations.

This term, the NDA has a majority with 293 seats, while the BJP holds 240 seats, which is just below the 272 majority mark on its own. In contrast, the Opposition INDIA bloc has 234 seats.
