Parliament Winter Session Live Update: Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi will initiate the debate on election reforms in the Lower House on Tuesday after a long debate on Vande Mataram on Monday. The opposition has been demanding a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Parliament since the monsoon session, but the government suggested having a debate on election reforms, citing that the Election Commission was an independent, autonomous and constitutional body.

Parliament Winter Session Live Update: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will begin the discussion on Vande Mataram in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. 

Parliament Winter Session Live Update: BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj participated in the discussion on 150 years of national song Vande Mataram in the Lok Sabha. Hailing Bengal as the birthplace of Vande Mataram, she said, "Today, Bengal is in a very serious and precarious situation, because the ruling dispensation is throttling Vande Mataram and political violence is spreading its roots there."

"I wish to assure this House that saffron is the colour of Shri Ram, saffron is the colour of revolution. I will tell the people of Bengal that they will soon be free of this lawlessness, because the preparations of victory are over and torchbearers of saffron are marching ahead," said Swaraj, adding, "Bihar was just a glimpse, West Bengal is up next (Bihar toh ek jhanki hai, Bengal abhi baaki hai)." 

Parliament Winter Session Live Update: Mahua Moitra said that BJP is using "Vande Mataram" song as an electoral wedge ahead of the 2026 Bengal polls, claiming that the ruling party was "butchering the soul" of the song "far more than any 1937 resolution ever did."

She said, "I had welcomed the discussion and I had also said that there should be no politics on this. There should be a comprehensive discussion so that the coming generations understand and know its meaning, and it has had a glorious contribution... They have tried very hard to tarnish the dignity of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Ji....but the country's history is witness that Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Ji will be called the maker of modern India, who led the country at that time when the country was at its most sensitive juncture...It is necessary to present the correct history in front of the people."

He said that the debate was on Vande Mataram and not for attacking Nehru or Indira Gandhi. He said, "The debate was started by PM Narendra Modi, it is really, very sorry to say, it was below standard. The debate was for Vande Mataram, not for attacking Jawaharlal Nehru, or Indira Gandhi. The way he has addressed the great author Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, it was really disturbing. Actually, not only Narendra Modi, or Amit Shah, BJP people are Bengali haters, they hate them, but under compulsion one has to tolerate Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, one has to tolerate Bengali fight for the freedom, one has to tolerate Rabindranath Tagore, because India has been enriched Bengalis. Parliament Winter Session Live Update: Congress MP Rajiv Shukla questioned the need for discussion on Vande Mataram, accusing the BJP of insulting Rabindranath Tagore. He said, "Was there a need for a debate on Vande Mataram after 150 years? The country has been independent for 75 years; neither they nor the Jan Sangh ever raised this issue back then. The BJP is trying to insult Rabindranath Tagore. They keep abusing Jawaharlal Nehru, but now they've started insulting Rabindranath Tagore too..."

BJP MP Sambit Patra on Monday accused the top Congress leaders of insulting the national song by skipping the Lok Sabha debate. "At the time when such an important debate on Vande Mataram was taking place in the Parliament, both Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were not present in the House because of the sense of guilt they had in their hearts due to the betrayal committed with Vande Mataram. They knew they would not be able to take it," Patra was quoted as saying by ANI.

BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla on Monday stated that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi should apologise for the mmistakes committed by Jawaharlal Nehru. "The entire nation will witness a historic moment in both Houses where a glorious tribute will be paid to Vande Mataram. It is not just a song, but a clarion call which united crores of Indians in their struggle against the British Raj, slavery, and invaders. But on the other hand, the country would like to see when Rahul Gandhi, if participating in the discussion, would begin by apologising to the country for the crime done by his family towards this song," Poonawalla was quoted as saying by ANI. 

The Congress MP stated that while the BJP talks about the nationalism, the people associated to the saffron party's ideology did not play any major role in the freedom movement. “The BJP speaks of nationalism today - but where were their political ancestors when millions fought the British? Congress leaders made sacrifices, went to jail, gave their lives. The ruling party cannot rewrite history,” Gogoi stated.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi stated that the BJP never tried to understand Bengal, adding that the saffron party sees the state through the lens of polarisation. “BJP sees Bengal only through the lens of polarisation. For them everything is ‘Bangladeshi’. They don’t understand who Bankim Chandra really was,” Gogoi stated.

"Mahatma Gandhi revived a thought that had lived in the bloodstream of India for thousands of years," the prime minister stated.

PM Modi stated that Jawaharlal Nehru did not defend the national song against the Muslim league. He stated that the Congress bowed down in front of the communal forces.

PM Modi stated that some people tried to betray the national song adding that, the Muslim League had opposed the song.

PM Modi stated that Vande Bharat played an integral role in uniting the country, adding that it continues to inspire the nation. "There is no leadership and opposition here. We are here to appreciate and accept the debt of Vande Mataram collectively. It is because of this song that we are all here together. It is a sacred occasion for all of us to acknowledge the debt of Vande Mataram. It united the nation from North to South and from East to West. The time has come to unite again and move together with everyone. This song should inspire and energise us to fulfil the dreams of our freedom fighters. We need to reiterate the resolve to make our nation self-reliant and developed by 2047," PM Modi stated. 

PM Modi stated that the Britishers got scared of the song, adding that they banned the song and took strict action against the freedom fighters for singing it.

The prime minister asserted that the song demonstrated the strength of India and its historical importance. He added that the Britishers got sleepless nights after the freedom fighters started singing this song.

PM Modi asserted that during the independence movement, freedom fighters got motivation from Vande Mataram to fight against the Britishers.

PM Modi stated that while the country celebrated 100 years of the national song, emergency was imposed by the Congress government.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has commenced his address for the Vande Mataram debate. He stated that everyone must be proud of the national song.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in the Lok Sabha to participate in Vande Mataram debate. He is set to lead the debate and is also likley to highlight the reoved parts of the song. 

Ahead of the debate in the Lok Sabha, the members of the Maharashtra assembly on Monday recited the full version of the song.

BJP MP Arun Govil stated that the debate was being conducted to raise awareness on Vande Mataram, adding that few lines were removed during Jawaharlal Nehru’s time. “Vande Mataram has been questioned many times, which is why a debate on the issue was needed. Actually, it is not a debate but the BJP’s effort to raise awareness about Vande Mataram. During Jawaharlal Nehru’s time, a few lines devoted to gods and goddesses were removed from Vande Mataram,” Arun Govil stated.

BJP MP Giriraj Singh claimed that some people do not believe in Vande Mataram, adding that they only believe in Babri Masjid. "Some people don't believe in 'Vande Mataram', but they believe in Babri Masjid..Not Humayun Kabir, but Mamata Banerjee has got it done (laid the foundation stone of mosque 'Babri Masjid' in Murshidabad). This has been done as per a thought-out strategy, and Mamata Banerjee will have to bear the consequences of it now."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the parliament to participate in the Vande Mataram debate. He will initiate the debate and is likely to highlight the removed part of the song.

Priyanka Chaturvedi stated that the discussion was important, adding that it should not be politicised. “The same government that issued a notification in the Rajya Sabha banning the use of these slogans, when it discusses them, it seems ridiculous. I hope there will be a comprehensive discussion on Vande Mataram... I hope this doesn't turn into an agenda, keeping the West Bengal elections in mind, and that the discussion should rise above politics and prioritise the country first,” Chaturvedi was quoted by ANI.

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla claimed that the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru opposed the song, adding that the Congress had politicised it for its benefits.

PM Modi is all set to lead the debate on 150 years of Vande Mataram in Lok Sabha on Monday. The prime minister is likely to highlight the parts of the song that were allegedly removed by the then central government.
