Parliament Winter Session:The Centre and opposition are likely to lock horns over several issues, including the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls, the Delhi Blast, and the Delhi air pollution as the winter session of the parliament begins on Monday. Apart from this, the Centre is also set to table 10 key bills, including reforms in the nuclear sector, corporate law, and higher education. The brief parliament session, ending on December 19, is expected to be full of ruckus as the regional opposition parties, such as the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) are expected to aggressively demand a discussion on the SIR.
Centre To Table 10 Key Bills
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday is likely to table a bill proposing an extra cess on the sin products such as pan masala, cigarettes, and other tobacco products. The centre is also expected to table bills to bring reforms in higher education, nuclear sector, and corporate law.
Apart from this, the Centre is also likely to propose a discussion to mark 150 years of the national song, 'Vande Mataram'. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, on Sunday, stated that several key bills are likely to be introduced in the parliament session, further seeking cooperation from the opposition parties.
Opposition Demands Discussion On SIR
The opposition parties are likely to target the Centre aggressively on the revision of the voters list, citing alleged political interference. However, the government has reportedly stated that the issue could not be discussed in the parliament, as the Election Commission has already sought approval from the Supreme Court to conduct the revision process. However, the regional parties of the poll-bound states, such as the TMC and DMK, are likely to strongly raise the issue.
