PM Modi-Election Ban Petition: The Delhi High Court on Monday dismissed a petition seeking a six-year ban on Prime Minister Narendra Modi from contesting any election for allegedly seeking votes in the name of religion and god while campaigning for the Lok Sabha Election 2024. Terming the petition as "thoroughly misconceived and devoid of merits," the court said that it is not the adjudication of the court to direct the Election Commission of India to take a particular view.
The High Court bench of Justice Sachin Datta rejected the plea while noting the submission of the ECI that it would hear the representation of the petitioner.
"The present writ petition is thoroughly misconceived. The petitioner presupposes that there has been a violation. It is not permissible for this Court to direct the ECI to take a particular view," the Court said as quoted by Bar and Bench.

The plea was filed by Advocate Anand S Jondhale, who cited a speech made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Uttar Pradesh's Pilibhit, alleging that the PM has not "only sought votes in the name of Hindu and Sikh deities and their places of worship but also made comments against opposition political parties as favouring Muslims."
Jondhale further said that during his address, PM Modi urged voters to support the BJP invoking Hindu and Sikh deities along with their respective places of worship.
"This statement of the Respondent No.2 [PM Modi] creating hatred by words, either spoken or written, or by signs or by visible representations or otherwise, promotes or attempts to promote, on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, caste or community or any other ground whatsoever, disharmony or feelings of enmity, hatred or ill-will between different religious, racial, language or regional groups or castes or communities," the plea reportedly mentioned.

The counsel for ECI, however, noted that it is receiving such pleas every day and taking action as per the law.
