In another major step against exam irregularities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said he has constituted a high-powered task force under Nandan Nilekani, the co-founder and Non-executive Chairman of Infosys. 

Prime Minister informed about the step in a video message. In a post on X, PM Modi said that the panel has been formed to make the examination system transparent, trustworthy and one that uses advanced technology.

Speaking about the action taken so far, the prime minister said, "The Central government is taking several steps for the future of students. Those who have played with the future of students are languishing in jails. We have set up fast-track courts. Tomorrow, we will also move forward in Parliament towards bringing a new law with stricter legal provisions."

"However, we have to think about the future. Our examination system should be trustworthy, transparent, and make maximum use of technology. Keeping all these aspects in mind, we have decided to constitute a high-powered task force under the leadership of globally renowned technology expert Nandan Nilekani," PM Modi said.

Explaining the function of the task force, the prime minister said, "The task force will focus on exam reforms, and based on its report, we will work towards making upcoming examinations more reliable at the earliest."

Govt takes slew of steps amid mounting pressure

The announcement comes amid a streak of reformative measures taken by the government in the wake of the NEET-UG paper leak, a massive national controversy around it and subsequent protests under the banner of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) that ended after former Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation on Saturday.

The government conducted a re-examination and announced results within two months while arresting those involved in the irregularities.

However, at least 22 aspirants died by suicide after the initial examination on May 3 was cancelled over a leak. The Central government has set-up fast track court in Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court to try criminal cases related to the paper leak. The government has also announced to introduce the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 in Parliament on Monday.

The amendment bill has been listed for introduction, consideration, and passage in the Lok Sabha.

Political row continues

However, the political deadlock is likely to continue in Parliament despite Pradhan's resignation, a key Opposition demand made for contributing to the smooth working of the Houses.

Lok Sabha LoP and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, demanding accountability for the alleged brutal attack on protesting students on the July 20 march to Parliament. The Congress is also reported to be strategising to demand an apology from PM Modi over the police action.
