Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that 'Deepfakes are a big concern', emphasising that in the age of artificial intelligence, the technology must be used responsibly. He also highlighted New Delhi's stand that the latest technological upgrades especially in the area of Artificial Intelligence should not widen the gap between the Global North and the Global South.
"During the times of Artificial Intelligence, it is important that technology should be used responsibly. To further promote this, next month, India will organise the ArtificiaI Global Partnership Summit," PM said during the address.

Prime Minister was speaking at the second Voice of Global South Summit which is being hosted by India virtually with participation from prominent Global South leaders. Earlier, he inaugurated 'DAKSHIN', a global centre for excellence for the Global South countries. The proposal to set up this institution was put forward by PM in the first VOGSS, organised in January 2023.
PM's comment holds significance as they came after many instances of misuse of deepfakes have surfaced in the country. In one such case, a deep fake video of Rashmika Mandanna, a Bollywood actress, went viral over social media platform X. Later, it was found that the purported video was not of Rashmika Mandanna but cyber criminals put her face on the video of US-based influencer Zara Patel.
