Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a joint sitting of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs at the central hall of the old Parliament building on Tuesday. Listing landmark legislations passed in the building, the Prime Minister recounted the passage of bills aimed at providing social justice to marginalised classes.

"Muslim mothers and sisters got justice because of this Parliament, law opposing 'triple talaq' was unitedly passed from here. In the last few years, Parliament has also passed laws giving justice to the transgenders."

He further recalled how MPs across party lines voted in favour of the abrogation of Article 370, under which special status to Jammu & Kashmir was enshrined in the Constitution.

"We have unitedly passed laws that will guarantee a bright future for the specially-abled people. It is our privilege that we got the opportunity to abrogate Article 370 from the Parliament."

The remarks came during the Special Session of Parliament that commenced on Monday and will run through Friday. The proceedings of the session are set to shift to the new Parliament building today.

He further stressed on the need for parties to rise above partisan interests and act for the collective benefit of the nation. "We have to make the right decisions at the right time for the future. We cannot restrict ourselves to just thinking about the political benefits."

PM Modi also highlighted the need to shift focus to science and technology. "Knowledge and innovation are the demands and we should focus on it. After Chandrayaan-3's success, our youth is inspired by the science & technology sector. We do not have to miss this opportunity."
