Kharge Vs PM Modi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the latter slammed his party over a comment that apparently gave a grim reality check on pre-poll guarantees in Congress-ruled states.
In a thread of tweets, PM Modi had said that Congress was coming to realise that "making unreal promises is easy but implementing them properly is tough or impossible". The Prime Minister had claimed that the Congress governments in Karnataka, Telangana and Himachal Pradesh were finding it increasingly difficult to fund the social welfare schemes mentioned in their election manifestos.
This came after Kharge publicly pulled up Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar over his statement that the Congress government in the state would revisit the 'Shakti' guarantee scheme, which offers free bus travel to women passengers.
Seeking to corner the Modi government, Kharge responded with a series of charges and posed a string of questions, including those pertaining to unemployment, inflation and alleged economic mismanagement. Addressed to PM Modi, Kharge's tweet was titled, "Lies, Deceit, Fakery, Loot & Publicity are the 5 adjectives which best describe your Govt!"
Kharge wrote, "Your drumbeating regarding a 100-day plan was a cheap PR stunt! On May 16, 2024 you had also claimed that you took inputs from more than 20 lakh people for the road map for 2047. RTI filed in PMO declined to put forth details, exposing your LIES!"
"Why is India's Unemployment Rate at a 45-year high? Why are stampedes witnessed wherever there are vacancies for a handful of jobs? Who is responsible for 70 paper leaks in 7 years? Who snatched 5 Lakh Govt jobs by selling stake in PSUs?" the Congress leader asked.
"Why have the household savings plunged to a 50-year low? Why has the cost of a common thali increased by 52% in just last year? TOP — Tomato Prices increased by 247%, Potato by 180% and Onion by 60%? Who levied GST on essential food items such as Milk, Curd, Atta, Dal? Who is penalising Middle Class through LTCG by indulging in Tax Terrorism?" the post added.
Kharge further raised concerns about the Centre's borrowing and claimed that the Centre has "has borrowed ₹150 lakh+ crores in past 10 years, amounting to a debt of ₹1.5 lakh on every Indian".
