Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Sikkim visit was cancelled on Thursday due to poor weather conditions, the officials informed. The prime minister was set to visit Gangtok to attend the golden jubilee celebrations of Sikkim’s statehood. The officials stated that the prime minister will attend the celebrations virtually, adding that the visit got cancelled due to heavy rain and thunderstorms forecast.

Earlier on Wednesday, the officials stated that PM Modi will lay the foundation stone of multiple projects, adding that the Prime Minister will also release a commemorative coin, souvenir coin, and stamp of 50 years of statehood. “The PM will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of several projects, including a 500-bed district hospital worth over Rs 750 crore in Namchi, a passenger ropeway at Sangachoeling in Pelling in Gyalshing district, and a statue of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji at Atal Amrit Udyan in Gangtok, among others," the statement read.

In his address, Prime Minister Modi stated that the central government is determined to boost connectivity in Sikkim and promote its culture and heritage on the global scale. "It is time for the world to see Sikkim not just as a hill station but as a global tourism destination. Sikkim is a complete tourism package, offering immense potential for adventure and sports tourism. India is one of the major economies of the world, and in the coming years, we are set to become a sporting superpower. The youth of Sikkim will play a vital role in realising that dream. This land has already given us legends like Baichung Bhutia, Olympian Tarundeep Rai, and Jaslal Pradhan," the Prime Minister said.

"In Sikkim alone, approximately 400 kilometres of new national highways have been constructed. In rural areas, over 100 kilometres of new roads have been built. With the Atal Setu, connectivity between Sikkim and Darjeeling has also greatly improved," PM Modi added.
