Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on his Wayanad visit today to assess the ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts following the recent devastating landslides in the region. The Prime Minister arrived at Kannaur airport and was received by Governor Arif Mohammed Khan and CM Pinarayi Vijayan approximately. PM conducted an aerial survey of the landslide-affected areas in Wayanad along with Kerala CM.

During the survey, PM Modi saw the origin of the landslide, the Iruvazhinji Puzha (River). He also observed the worst affected areas of Punchirimattam, Mundakkai and Chooralmala.

Following the aerial survey, the Prime Minister visited specific locations on the ground that have been severely impacted by the disaster.

During this visit, rescue teams briefed him on the current status of evacuation operations and the challenges faced in the ongoing relief efforts.

In addition, PM Modi visited a relief camp and hospital where he will meet with and interact with the victims and survivors of the landslide.

Later in the day, the Prime Minister will chair a review meeting where he will receive detailed briefings on the incident and the progress of relief efforts. This meeting is crucial as it will likely determine the next steps in the central government's response to the disaster.

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, welcomed Prime Minister Modi's visit, expressing confidence that the Prime Minister’s firsthand assessment of the devastation will lead to the disaster being declared a national calamity. "Thank you, Modi ji, for visiting Wayanad to personally take stock of the terrible tragedy. This is a good decision," Gandhi said in a post on X.

Earlier, In a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the state has requested the central government to declare this as a national disaster and a severe calamity.

The Kerala government has announced several relief measures for the affected families. According to an official press release from the Kerala Chief Minister's Office (CMO), all affected individuals in Mundakkai and Chooralmala will receive immediate assistance.

An adult member from families that have lost their livelihood will be eligible for a daily allowance of Rs. 300, with up to two individuals per family eligible for this benefit. For families with bedridden or long-term hospitalised patients, the allowance will be extended to three individuals. This financial assistance will be provided for 30 days.

In addition, each family currently residing in relief camps will receive immediate financial assistance of Rs. 10,000.
