As rain fury continues across several states in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit the flood-affected states and review the situation, news agency ANI reported, citing government sources.

Over 500 people have lost their lives due to rain-related incidents this season in Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Jammu and Kashmir.  Apart from lives, north Indian states saw cattle, roads and properties destruction.

The move is crucial as several flood-hit states have demanded Central funds from the government to deal with the crisis. 

Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh, which has seen 95 flash floods, 45 cloudbursts, and 133 major landslide incidents since the onset of monsoon on June 20, is worst hit in terms of lives lost.

At least 360 people have died in rain-related incidents and road accidents, while 47 are missing since the monsoon began.

Earlier in the day, the India Air Force helicopters airlifted 524 pilgrims stranded on the Manimahesh route. The helicopters also carried three bodies.

Punjab

On the other hand, the death toll in Punjab rose to 43 as floods caused widespread devastation. The state has been declared disaster-hit. It is the worst flood in the state in the last four decades.

The crops on over 1.71 lakh hectares of land have been damaged due to the floods. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan visited the state, assuring people that the Centre stands with them in this hour of crisis. 

Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir also witnessed major disasters due to inclement weather, including a cloudburst in Chashoti, a landslide in Reasi and a landslide in Vaishno Devi, among others. Nearly, 100 people, includig tourists, lost their lives in these disasters.

On Friday, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah directed that the spots prone to flooding be reinforced and people stuck in villages be evacuation. The CM held a meeting on the post-flood scenario and directed strict vigilance until the water recedes.
