Prayagraj Hospital Clash: Major action has been taken following the three-day doctors' strike and unrest at Swarup Rani Nehru Hospital (SRN Hospital), in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, on Friday. Motilal Nehru Medical College Principal Dr VK Pandey has suspended 20 doctors from the Trauma Center following the recommendation of an investigation committee into the incident.
Among the suspended doctors, 10 are junior residents, and the remaining are senior residents from the orthopaedic department.
What Is The Entire Issue?
It is reported that these doctors were on duty when the female lawyers were assaulted on May 20. A clash broke out between lawyers and junior doctors at the SRN Hospital on Wednesday, following a dispute over a patient's treatment. Lawyers lodged an FIR against unidentified doctors at Kotwali police station, alleging negligence and rude behaviour. VK Pandey, Principal of Motilal Nehru Medical College, under which SRN is affiliated, said four to five lawyers brought a patient to SRN Hospital in the morning.
"The doctors advised that only one attendant should stay with the patient, following which the lawyers became agitated and an argument broke out," he said.
Pandey said the dispute later escalated into a scuffle between the lawyers and doctors. He alleged that one of the lawyers broke a glass panel at the hospital, sustained an injury to his hand, accused the doctors of assault and lodged a complaint.
Meanwhile, advocate Riya alias Rasika Aneesh Khan alleged in her complaint that a fellow woman lawyer had been injured in an accident, and three to four women advocates reached SRN Hospital with her. According to the complaint, a junior doctor was sleeping at the hospital and allegedly behaved indecently with the women advocates when woken up. The complaint alleged that several junior doctors confined some advocates inside a room, assaulted them, tore the clothes of women advocates and touched their private parts.
Police said a case has been registered against unidentified doctors at Kotwali police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Medical College Vice Principal Dr Mohit Jain and investigation committee member Professor Dr Dilip Chaurasia said, "The investigation is ongoing. The doctors have been suspended. After the investigation is completed, it will be examined to determine who was at fault, and further action will be taken."
Lawyers Call Off Their Protest
Following the action against the doctors, the lawyers' anger has subsided, and they have decided to end their protest. The doctors did not return to work, and they were standing in groups on the hospital campus. Whether they will return to work after the action is still uncertain, prompting the administration to prepare for other options.
It is believed that this action could lead to anger among the doctors. The administration is considering how to deal with the emerging situation. Police and administrative officials are likely to hold a meeting with the Principal of the Medical College.
