To tackle the persistent traffic congestion in the Mundhwa-Magarpatta area, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced plans for a new underpass at the Kad Vasti junction. The underpass, which will be constructed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, aims to improve traffic flow, particularly in areas like Jehangir Chowk, which often sees long traffic delays.
Estimated to cost around Rs 67.3 crore, this underpass will be the second project of its kind in the Mundhwa area, following a similar proposal at Mundhwa Chowk, designed to offer better access to the Kharadi bypass. The move comes as part of PMC’s ongoing efforts to address the rising vehicular traffic in this rapidly developing part of Pune.
Locals Residents have expressed support for the proposal, noting that long-standing traffic issues have made daily commutes frustrating. Residents frequently experience long waits at traffic signals, especially at major junctions such as Mundhwa Chowk, Tadigutta Chowk, and Kad Vasti Chowk, which are heavily congested.

The new underpass is expected to enhance traffic efficiency across Nagar Road, Mundhwa, Magarpatta, and Hadapsar, areas that have seen substantial residential and commercial growth. PMC officials anticipate that the underpass will significantly shorten travel times for commuters in these parts of the city.
Planned for construction at the Kad Vasti crossing, the underpass will stretch towards Magarpatta, just ahead of Tadigutta Chowk. The PMC is optimistic about collaborating with private developers for its construction, following the successful PPP model, and plans are being made to finance the project through a credit note-based system.
While many residents are excited about the infrastructure improvement, they also call for an enhanced public transport system in the area. The lack of reliable public transit options often forces people to rely on private vehicles, which only adds to the traffic burden.
In response to these concerns, the road department has indicated that plans to widen key roads in the area are already in motion. Some roads, such as the stretch from Tadigutta Chowk to North Main Road, are already being expanded in collaboration with Defence authorities, offering further hope for a smoother traffic flow in the future.
