Pune Porsche Accident: Two members of the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) were slapped with show cause notices by the Maharashtra Women and Child Development Commissioner after a probe found "procedural lapses," "misconduct," and "non-compliance of norms" in their conduct regarding the bail granted to the minor accused in the Pune Porsche crash case. The JJB members were heavily criticised after they allowed bail to the minor accused on very lenient terms. The accused was asked to write an essay on road safety and volunteer with the traffic police as bail conditions.
Two software engineers from Madhya Pradesh, Anish Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, were killed on May 19 after a speeding Porsche car rammed their motorcycle from behind in Pune's Kalyani Nagar area. The accused minor, son of an influential builder, was thrashed by commuters and handed over to the police. The case sparked a national uproar after it came to light that the minor was drunk at the time of the incident.
Following the outrage over bail granted to the 17-year-8-month-old minor in the case, the Maharashtra government ordered a probe into the conduct of the JJB members handling the case.
"The five-member committee submitted its report on Friday to the Women and Child Development Department Commissioner. The WCD department, after receiving the report, has issued notices to two JJB members appointed by the department," an official said, as quoted by PTI.
"The report has found glaring lapses and mistakes in issuing the bail order by a single member of the JJB on May 19. Though the order granting bail was issued by one member, the other member gave consent the next day. Misconduct and non-compliance of norms have been found on the part of the two members, and they have been apprised of it," the official said. As part of its probe, the committee appointed by the WCD department had recorded the statements of the two JJB members, he added.
The JJB is a three-member body, with two members appointed by the WCD department of the state government and one member from the judiciary. Following the submission of the report by the probe committee, the two members have been slapped with show-cause notices. They were asked to submit their replies in 4-5 days, WCD Commissioner Dr. Prashant Narnavare confirmed.
