Punjab Politics: With just a few months remaining in the Punjab Assembly election, the speculations of a possible return of former CM Captain Amarinder Singh to Congress have again gained momentum. The talks began after senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi stated that the former congressman is his favourite BJP leader. While addressing the captain as "uncle Amarinder", Gandhi asserted that they share a good bond and appreciated his military knowledge.

Rahul's Special Message

On being asked about his favourite BJP leader during a Gen-G dialogue in Delhi, Gandhi recalled his relations with the former chief minister of Punjab. "I get along easily with him. He's very easygoing and an expert on military history, so I like him. Hello, Uncle Amarinder," the Raebareli MP said. His remarks have escalated the speculations of Singh's possible return to the grand old party ahead of the assembly polls.

Captain's Classic Response

Captain Amarinder, while responding to Rahul's message, stated that he was pleased to hear such remarks from him, reported news agency PTI. He recalled that Gandhi's father and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi were his classmate and a good friend. The former Punjab CM further stated that he will continue to have family ties with Rahul and Sonia Gandhi; however, he added that he is committed to the BJP politically.

Singh Unhappy In BJP?

Earlier, similar discussions had begun when Captain claimed that contrary to Congress, he is not consulted by the BJP before major decisions. Rahul Gandhi's statement comes at a time when the Punjab Congress is grappling with an internal crisis ahead of the key polls.

Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, while addressing a crowd in Ludhiana earlier this week, stated that Rahul Gandhi could take a big decision within a week. Apart from this, party MLA Rana Gurjit Singh said that the captain will be welcomed if he decides to return to the grand old party. Congress leader Pargat Singh has also said that the party could benefit from Amarinder's experience.
