The Punjab government has issued restrictions governing the sale and usage of firecrackers throughout the approaching festival season, which includes Diwali, Gurpurab, Christmas, and New Year's Eve.
According to the criteria, firecrackers can only be burst at the following times: Diwali (October 31) from 8-10 pm, Gurpurab (November 15) from 4-5 am and 9-10 pm, and Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve from 11.55 pm-12.30 am.
The rules are designed to reduce the harmful effects of firecrackers on respiratory health, especially for those who are more susceptible. The Punjab government implemented these measures in accordance with Supreme Court of India and National Green Tribunal directives.
Only 'Green' Firecrackers Allowed
According to the Information and Public Relations Department, Punjab, only "green crackers"—free of dangerous substances like barium salts and antimony, mercury, and arsenic compounds—will be sold and used. Sales are restricted to licensed traders dealing exclusively in permitted firecrackers and storing, displaying, or selling firecrackers exceeding permissible decibel levels is prohibited.

Internet retailers such as Flipkart and Amazon are not allowed to do business in Punjab. This prohibition aims to guarantee greater sales monitoring and license compliance.
Deputy Commissioners across Punjab have been asked to lead large awareness programs to educate the people about the destructive effects of firecrackers on health and the environment.
The government has also directed law enforcement authorities to ensure strict adherence to these restrictions. Markets and public areas will be closely monitored to prevent unlawful sales and to guarantee that firecrackers are only used during specific hours and locations.
