The Punjab Police have registered multiple First Information Reports (FIR) over casteist social media posts about the Chief Justice of India (CJI), BR Gavai, after a lawyer tried to attack him in the Supreme Court. The state government stated that the FIRs were registered after receiving complaints from various districts. The FIRs were registered under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act of 1989 for disturbing "peace and harmony" by using casteist remarks for a reputed office bearer. Earlier on October 6, a controversy sparked after a lawyer attacked the chief justice for allegedly insulting one of the religions.
While the Punjab government did not share the exact details of the action, it asserted that such actions are being monitored. “Cracking down hard on unlawful and objectionable social media content targeting the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, the Punjab Police today registered several FIRs after receipt of numerous complaints in various districts of the State on over a hundred social media handles,” a press note by the state government stated.

Several prominent politicians, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal criticised the attack attempt on CJI Gavai. However, Rakesh Kishore, the lawyer who attacked the chief justice, justified his actions by stating that the god directed him to attack CJI Gavai. "I did not do it; God did. The Chief Justice of India mocked Sanatan Dharma. This was the Almighty's order, a reaction to an action," Kishore stated.

Earlier last month, a massive controversy sparked after CJI Gavai gave alleged controversial remarks while dismissing a case demanding the restoration of a 7-foot beheaded idol of Lord Vishnu at Khajuraho. However, CJI Gavai clarified that he respects all the religions, and the remarks were not given to hurt anyone's sentiments.
