R G Kar Doctor Death: Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Saturday warned the West Bengal administration of a nationwide action if all the culprits behind the brutal rape and murder of R G Kar Medical College doctor are not arrested in 48 hours. Issuing a press release, the medical fraternity body demanded a "fair, transparent and time-sensitive criminal investigation" in the case which has shocked the nation and ignited massive protests in Kolkata.
A 31-year-old Post-Graduate Trainee (PGT) doctor was found dead in a seminar hall of government-run R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Friday. The autopsy reports revealed brutal sexual assault on the victim, with multiple injuries on the body. Protests erupted in and out of the campus as the nurses, junior doctors and students took to the streets demanding swift justice and capital punishment for the culprits.
The Indian Medical Association called for justice in its press note, calling the crime "an index of the anarchy and insecurity prevailing in the campus."
"IMA HQs mourns the death of this precious daughter of India and condemns the existing situations which enabled this crime to be committed with impunity inside the campus. If safety and security cannot be ensured in the citadels of learning it only indicates the incompetency of the administration. The entire medical fraternity of India stands with the bereaved family and her colleagues," the medical body further noted.
In its statement, IMA also demanded timely and transparent justice for the RG Kar doctor, failing which "IMA will be constrained to initiate nationwide action. A fair, transparent and time-sensitive criminal investigation is in order. An ultimatum of two days is given to
arrest culprits otherwise IMA will take Nationwide Protests," it said.
"Increasing evidence of the toxic environment prevailing in workplaces of doctors is highly disturbing. Doctors especially women are vulnerable to violence because of the nature of the profession. It is for the authorities to provide for the safety of doctors inside hospitals and campuses," the note stated.
