Rahul Gandhi has suffered a major blow as the Allahabad High Court has dismissed his plea challenging an order of the Varanasi MP/MLA Court against him over the controversial claim that Sikhs can not wear a turban in the country.
The plea dismissal means that the Varanasi court can now proceed with the hearing of the case in which Gandhi stands accused. Gandhi filed a plea with the Allahabad High Court after the Varanasi MP/MLA Court on July 21, 2025, had admitted a revision petition.
The case pertains to remarks made by Gandhi during his three-day US visit in 2024, where he alleged that Sikhs were not allowed in India to wear turbans or kada (hand bracelet) and were not permitted to enter gurudwaras.
While speaking at an event in US state of Virginia last year, Gandhi said, "The fight (in India) is about whether a Sikh is going to be allowed to wear a turban...whether a Sikh will be allowed to wear a kara or go to the gurdwara. That's what the fight is about, and it's not just for Sikhs, but for all religions".
The petition was initially filed against him on November 28, 2024, which was trashed by the MP/MLA Court. Following this, a review petition was filed in the Varanasi Sessions Court, which was admitted by the Special Judge (MP/MLA Court) on July 21, 2025.
