The Congress workers on Tuesday engaged in a clash with police officials while trying to enter Guwahati after the party resumed the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. Nearly 5,000 Congress workers including Rahul Gandhi and other leaders were intercepted by the heavy police deployment by the state government. Following this, the party workers tried to break the police barriers and the police resorted to lathi-charge.

Hitting out at Congress over alleged "naxalite tactics", Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, he has directed the state police chief to register a case against Rahul Gandhi for "provoking" the crowd. "I have instructed @DGPAssamPolice to register a case against your leader @RahulGandhi for provoking the crowd & use the footage you have posted on your handles as the evidence. Your unruly behaviour and violation of agreed guidelines have resulted in a massive traffic jam in Guwahati now," said Sarma in a post on X.

The Congress alleged that the route designated for the 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra' in Assam was used by a rally of Bajrang Dal and JP Nadda, but their march was stopped.

This comes amid the Congress party's accusations against the Assam government and CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging interference in their foot march since it entered the state on Thursday.

Speaking at a gathering near the Guwahati border, Rahul Gandhi said that Congress workers would not break rules or disrupt law and order, but he added that it doesn't mean they are weak.

"Assam CM, the Union Home Minister, and the PM can break the rules, but we (Congress) would never do such a thing. However, this doesn't mean that we are weak. Congress workers are 'Babbar Sher'," Rahul Gandhi said.

Earlier on Monday, Rahul Gandhi was denied permission to enter the temple in Assam and later sat on a dharna to stage a protest, taking a jibe at PM Modi he said ‘Only one person is allowed to enter the temple today’, referring to the Ram Mandir event.

Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Sonia Gandhi were invited to attend the Pran Pratishtha ceremony of the new Ram temple in Ayodhya, but the leaders chose to skip the event by characterising the event as BJP-RSS event ahead of the Lok Sabha elections 2024.
