Indian Railways on December 21 announced an increase in fares for long-distance travel, effective from December 26, while local trains remain unaffected. As per the revised rates, passengers will be charged an additional 1 paise per kilometre for journeys exceeding 215 km. Those travelling in both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned coaches will have to pay 2 paise per kilometre extra. Fares of fully air-conditioned Tejas Express services operating from Delhi to major cities will also see a hike from December 26.

Delhi To Lucknow (490 km)
For the 490-km journey, the fare hike will apply to 275 km beyond the 215-km limit. At a cumulative increase of about Rs 8-9, the AC Chair Car fare is expected to rise from Rs 1,200 to around Rs 1,208, while Executive Class may increase from Rs 2,000 to roughly Rs 2,008. The hike is marginal and uniform across classes.
Delhi To Mumbai (1,384 km)
This long-distance route attracts an increase for about 1,169 km beyond 215 km, translating to roughly Rs 35 extra. The revised fares are expected to be around Rs 1,815 for AC 3-tier (from Rs 1,780), Rs 2,509 for AC 2-tier (from Rs 2,474), and about Rs 4,090 for AC First Class (from Rs 4,055).
Delhi To Rajendra Nagar (Patna) (1,000 km)
With around 785 km falling under the revised slab, passengers may pay nearly Rs 24 more. AC 3-tier fares could rise from Rs 1,482 to about Rs 1,506, AC 2-tier from Rs 2,037 to around Rs 2,061, and AC First Class from Rs 3,280 to approximately Rs 3,304.
Expanded Services Of Railway
The Railways added that it has significantly expanded its services over the past decade and noted that the fare revision is expected to generate an additional Rs 600 crore in annual revenue. It also highlighted a sharp rise in expenditure, with manpower costs reaching Rs 1.15 lakh crore and pension liabilities increasing to Rs 60,000 crore. In addition, operational expenses have climbed to Rs 1.15 lakh crore in the current financial year.
